3 years ago today I got on a bus to New York City to begin a journey to San Francisco. I had lived in New York City for three years before, but had spent the previous year traveling in Asia. So I visited friends in the city for a week and then got on more buses, hitchhiked for the first time, hiked and camped in the snow, and stayed with strangers I met through the internet site couchsurfing.org. I eventually made it to San Francisco and stood on top of a pyramid in Mexico.
Today I moved back to New York City. I left four and a half years ago. I don't know how long I will live here, and I really don't care. I'm in the moment. I'm telling a story by writing a book, and interviewing for jobs so I can continue to live here as long as I feel it is right. Whatever happens here, it's a necessary step in the journey, to view this familiar place with new eyes.
I've been thinking a lot about everything I've learned and experienced since I first moved here seven years ago, and everything I have going for me that I didn't have the first time. For starters, I know what's it's like to live here, having lived here for three years. I have seven more years of life experience, which is always good for something. I've traveled the world and this country, lived on the other side of the world and other side of this country, met many people, read many masters and written many words that hopefully conveyed intriguing ideas to the imaginations of readers, an endeavor I continue to pursue with enthusiasm. I will keep working hard to help inform, inspire and entertain people hungry to learn about their world.
In other news, I feel very strange driving my car without a canoe on top.
