Today we talked about embracing your fears and transforming them to courage. It seems that every song we listened to had that theme in there somewhere. "No Woman, No Cry," which was suggested by one student, has the line, "my fear is my only courage, so we've got to push on through. Then Gnarls Barkley's "Smiley Faces" says, "Your worries and fears become your friends, and you end up smiling again." I played them Dylan's "Forever Young" today because it's our last class of songs before the exam tomorrow, and there is the line "may you always be courageous, stand upright and be strong."
It has been a very good two days of classes, teaching all about India, discussing perseverance, goals, positive steps, the value of facing fears and expanding your comfort zone, finding what you have in common with your fellow humans so that you have less apprehension when you meet someone different, not worrying about how you are judged by others, and the balance of reason and faith.
Tomorrow I'm picking up my sister and her husband at the airport! I haven't seen them in two years :)
